UPDATE: St-Boniface Hospital has named the laboratory that the CITEL research will take place in, the Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge Laboratory. (more...)
Your support of the 27th Annual Sons of Italy Gala Dinner is helping to establish the Canada Italy Tissue Engineering Laboratory (CITEL), a unique collaboration between the University of Roma Tor Vergata in Rome, Italy, and St-Boniface Hospital, with the creation of a shared laboratory at St-Boniface Hospital Research. This type of collaboration between two outstanding institutions in Canada and Italy has never been done before in Winnipeg.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Dr. Paolo Di Nardo (see picture), a University of Roma Tor Vergata professor, has created “patches” of ethical heart stem cells.
Dr. Pawan Singal, Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at St-Boniface Hospital Research, believes that these patches can be applied to different heart failure models available at St-Boniface Hospital Research. The new technology, developed jointly, may be useful in repairing damaged heart tissue after a heart attack.
CITEL will promote the exchange of faculty members, researchers and students between Italy and Canada. Italian scientists will come to Winnipeg to share their specific engineering knowledge, developed by Dr. Di Nardo’s lab, with scientists at St-Boniface Hospital Research. CITEL will also organize academic meetings, symposia and workshops.
The establishment of CITEL, which will be located in the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at St-Boniface Hospital Research, is unique. This type of collaboration between two outstanding institutions in Canada and Italy, with the creation of a shared laboratory in the Canada, has never been done before in Winnipeg.
Sons of Italy is pleased to support St-Boniface Hospital Foundation in its on-going research. Together, we will find a way to minimize the damage of heart disease.
